Joint Generator

Large scale lightweight structures

This joint generating algorithm takes any line format and generates the files for 3D printing the joints and laser cutting beams to size from stock material. Limited build volume and the linear relation between volume and price of additive manufacturing has always posed an interesting challenge for building large scale structures. By combining 3D printing with laser cutting this algorithm leverages the best of both technologies. It automatically numbers each of the joints and beams so complicated structures can easily be assembled by hand.

Variance in stock material and tolerances can be adapted for by changing the parameters of the algorithm making it compatible with a wide variety of stock materials. With its node and beam format the algorithm facilitates the design of very lightweight, large and stiff structures. The computational column in the images at the top of this page can be lifted with one hand even though it is over 2,5 meters tall.
